The Learning Garden serves as a laboratory for continuing education for Master Urban Gardener (MUG) participants and other interested community gardeners. MUG volunteers implement and practice intensive vegetable gardening techniques in a series of raised garden beds. Most of the produce is donated to organizations such as Rosie’s Place and the Mattapan Family Services Center. MUG volunteers who help maintain the Learning Garden benefit from an opportunity to garden under the guidance of BNAN’s garden educator and are welcome to share some of the harvest.
The Learning Garden serves as a site for informative vegetable garden workshops included in the Seed, Sow & Grow program series. At these participatory workshops gardeners learn about soil preparation, planting techniques, vegetable and edible flower care and uses, water conservation, pest management and more. Participants also have an opportunity to ask questions and share ideas with other avid gardeners.
The Learning Garden is set up for self-guided observation of basic gardening techniques such as mulching, vertical planting, intensive plant spacing, water conservation, and season extending. Groups are welcome to visit the Learning Garden for a guided tour. Contact joann@bostonnatural.org to arrange a visit.
