BNAN continues its annual tradition of offering native plant seeds to all new and renewing members as a special thank you. The selection for 2012 is the herbaceous perennial, butterfly weed (Asclepias tuberosa). Butterfly weed is a tap-rooted perennial growing 1.5 to 2 feet tall and equal in width. The lime-green foliage alternates along upright stems, which ultimately lean outward under the weight of the blooms in July and August. Butterfly Weed is an excellent nectar source for pollinating insects, and provides food for the larval stages of the Monarch and Queen butterflies. The seeds were collected from plants raised at City Natives, BNAN’s garden learning center in Mattapan. We hope you will enjoy this addition to your garden.
